On Monday 1st March 2010, a fresh initiative enlisting the real estate industry to support major charities was launched in Sydney. Heart for the Homeless hopes to build a network of agents across the nation to collect donations from residents moving home.

Heart for the Homeless was piloted in 2009 by 23 year old Mr. Leighton Walters and is now a not-for-profit registered organisation focused on empowering industries to be active in reducing poverty and alleviating homelessness.  Moving Cities initiative calls on real estate agents to encourage their clients who are moving to donate food clothing and furniture to those who would otherwise go without said Leighton Walters, Founder and CEO.

As a young person working in the real estate industry, I am excited by the potential of this simple concept to help others facing difficult situations.The Moving Cities initiative seeks to reclaim the average 15-50 kilograms of non-perishable food items that would normally be thrown in the bin each time a person moves house said Mr. Walters.

The resources will be collected and distributed to major charities in the local community such as housing refuges and charity retail Mr. Walters said. The NSW Minister for Fair Trading, Virginia Judge, Federal Minister for Housing, Tanya Plibersek and Captain Paul Moulds from The Salvation Army helped launch the Moving Cities Initiative. It was an informative night full of live music, magic, a live auction, entertainment and laughter mixed with the serious note of how the future of poverty will be addressed by Heart for the Homeless.

It’s great to see the real estate industry supporting this initiative and supporting their local communities. I encourage all real estate agents in NSW to register with Heart for the Homeless and take part Ms Judge said.Finally the real estate industry has an organisation focused on standing in the gap between public and private, industry and charity and giving incredible and practical opportunities for agencies to be active in corporate responsibility” Mr Walters said.Real Estate Agents or anyone planning a move and is looking to find out more about Heart for the Homeless and how they can take part can visit http://www.heartforthehomeless.org

Now servicing the areas cities of Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra and stay tuned for Melbourne and Perth, property managers can now register their businesses for donations via the Heart for the Homeless website http://www.heartforthehomeless.org

The H4H organisation have discovered that there is somewhere between 15 and 50 kilos of food that is thrown out when a tenant or a vendor move house.

Other charity organisations such as Oz Harvest food rescue  http://www.ozharvest.org.au/ already exist to collect food and turn it into meals for the homeless, what H4H want to do is collect the food thrown out at the time of moving house and have this redistributed into the right channels to feed the homeless.

My own experience with this occurred just last week when my family and friends vacated a holiday house we rented together only to discover we had three boxes of food left over at the end of the week.  I should add all of the items had either not been opened or had only been used once, like the soy sauce we bought and used for one meal only.  Fortunately we had local friends that we redistributed this too but the thought of throwing it out when there are charity organisations crying out for help in this area, it just felt like waste.

So as a property manager, this is what you can do;

1. Log on and register your business at http://www.heartforthehomeless.org

2. Amend your vacating letter to tenants advising that their contributions to H4H are wanted.

3. You need to advise H4H of the tenants details to co-ordinate a date and time for collection of the left over goods.

That’s it.  That is all you need to do contribute to H4H and make a difference to the life of the homeless in your city.
